My chronic pain journey began on May 3, 2019 when I woke up with a headache.

I never could have imagined that headache would last for three years straight! But the headache was just the beginning. I became sicker over time, and on top of the ceaseless headaches, I soon developed more symptoms: chronic migraine, tight muscles, extreme fatigue, brain fog, visual disturbances, and strange episodes of full body aches. It was relentless. I was doing everything in my power to heal, consulting with doctors and specialists, and juggling at least four appointments every week. But I kept getting worse. Why couldn't my doctors figure out what was wrong with me? I was so tired of being in constant pain. I wanted answers and was losing hope. Would I have to deal with this constant headache for the rest of my life?

Just when I was about to give up hope, I discovered the book The Way Out by Alan Gordon & Alon Ziv. It was life-changing for me. I learned that my body was not broken. I actually had mind body syndrome (mbs), also known as neuroplastic pain or tension myositis syndrome (tms). More on this later 👇. I discovered that I could retrain or rewire my brain out of the chronic pain cycle and teach my nervous system that I was safe. This was the hope I needed. When I decided to focus my energy (what little of it that was left, anyway) on studying the mind body connection to pain, it felt like I was taking back control of my life and saying no to a future living with chronic pain.

One of the single most important things I learned through my training was this key aspect of chronic pain:

The source of chronic pain – no matter where you experience it in your body – is your BRAIN! 🤯

See, what happens is, we get stuck in the chronic pain cycle because at some point our brains went into a hypervigilant state trying to protect us from perceived danger. Our BRAINS sound the “danger alarm” and generate (and perpetuate!) very real, physical pain and other symptoms like fatigue in the absence of a physical injury. Once our brains become hypervigilant, they are unable to turn off the pain signals on their own. To heal, we need to treat the root cause of chronic pain – our brains becoming hypervigilant – by teaching our brains that we are safe and by retraining our brains out of the chronic pain cycle!

Learning this set me on a journey to recovering from my chronic pain. I have not had a single migraine since I began brain retraining work! I learned mind body tools to stop them in their tracks! My headaches were once so bad, I needed to wear ice on my head nearly 24/7. But now? I still can’t believe it myself, but I no longer need my ice hats! 🎉 Within two months of practicing these mind body healing techniques, I was able to clear my freezer of my 7 – yes, 7! – ice hats! And here’s the real kicker… you can learn to do this too.

Mind body syndrome, also known as neuroplastic pain or tms, is not another diagnosis. It means that your pain is brain generated (but very real!) and that there is hope for healing. When your brain is stuck in the chronic pain cycle it forms pain neural pathways, just like our brain forms neural pathways every time we learn something new. Our brains actually learn pain! How does this happen? We unknowingly reinforce pain neural pathways through our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This is why we can get sicker over time – we accidentally strengthen the pain neural pathways. So is there any good news? Yes! Our brains have an amazing feature called neuroplasticity, meaning the brain can change by forming new neural pathways. Our brains are always changing when we learn something new. By unlearning the pain neural pathways we can heal!
